Donker, Charles

1940 –
Dutch

Considered The Netherland’s foremost living graphic artist, Charles Donker (born 1940) has created an impressive œuvre of exquisitely rendered images of flora and fauna.  Beautifully detailed depictions of owls, trees and the Dutch countryside are drawn from nature and translated into etchings with aquatint.  Generally produced in very limited editions, his work is easily recognizable by its delicate draftsmanship and use of shadow.

Donker began his art training studying monumental art at the Koninklijke Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving (Art School) of Den Bosch.  His work is presently in the collections of many major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam and the Rembrandthuis Museum, Amsterdam.  He was recently the subject of an important retrospective at the Fondation Custodia in Paris.
