Boldini, Giovanni

1842 – 1931

The Italian artist Giovanni Boldini is best known for his portraits featuring swirling brushstrokes which earned him the nickname the “Master of Swish”. The son of a painter of religious subjects, he began his formal art education in Florence but continued to study and achieved his professional success in Paris and London. As well as painting elegant society ladies, Boldini also did portraits of his artist friends like John Singer Sargent, Giuseppe Verdi and Paul Helleu.
