 Prouve, Victor 1858-1943
A native of Nancy, Victor Prove's parents were employed by the renowned ceramic and glass manufacturer "Galle" and he grew up in an artistic milieu. His natural talent for drawing earned him early admission to the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and by 24 he made his debut in a Salon exhibition.
Victor Prouve was gifted in many fields and worked as a painter, (portraits and landscapes), sculptor, printmaker, metal and leather design, fabric, embroidery and jewelry design. He also collaborated on creations in glass, furniture and other decorative objects for some of the great fabricators of Nancy including Galle and Daum. His murals decorated important government buildings in Paris and other cities.
From 1919-1940, he was the director of the illustrious Ecole des Beaux Arts de Nancy with the mission that art should be readily accessible to all. His son, Jean Prouve, continued in the family tradition and achieved considerable acclaim as a furniture designer in the 1930's and '40's.
