 Gruau, Rene (1909-2004)
Born Renato de Zavagli in Rimini, Italy, of an aristocratic father and a French mother, René Gruau assumed his mother's maiden name as his own when he moved to Paris to begin his career as a fashion illustrator in 1924. In the 1930's he collaborated with major magazines including "Femina", "Marie Claire" and "L'Officiel".
After World War 2, Gruau was commissioned by his good friend Christian Dior to design the publicity for Miss Dior Perfume and the New Look. This led to further work for the American publications "Harper's Bazaar", "Vogue" and "Flair".
More commissions followed including the promotional graphics for "Rouge Baiser", "Lido" and the "Moulin Rouge", as well as fashion illustrations for the couture houses of Balenciaga, Givenchy, Rochas and Balmain.
Rene Gruau left behind a large and important body of work that his prized by collectors around the world.
